Margaret Cho

Margaret Cho was born and raised in San Francisco and started performing stand-up at age 16 in a comedy club called The Rose & Thistle above a bookstore her parents ran.  Soon after, she won a comedy contest where first prize was opening for Jerry Seinfeld.  She moved to Los Angeles in the early '90s and lived in a house with several other young performers.

Still in her early twenties, Cho hit the college circuit, where she immediately became the most booked act in the market and garnered a nomination for Campus Comedian of The Year. Arsenio Hall introduced her to late night audiences, Bob Hope put her on a prime time special and, seemingly overnight, Margaret Cho became a national celebrity.

She starred in a short-lived ABC sitcom called All-American Girl.  In 1999, Cho chronicled her experience on the sitcom in an off Broadway one-woman show called I'm The One That I Want. The show was extremely well received and toured the U.S.  After the success of her first show, Cho launched Notorious C.H.O. in 2001, a smash-hit 37-city national tour that culminated in a sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall.  Cho embarked on her third sold-out national tour, Revolution, in 2003.  The concert film premiered on the Sundance Channel in 2004 and was released on DVD later that year. The CD of Revolution was nominated for a Grammy for best comedy album of the year for 2003.

In 2004, Cho took her politically charged State of Emergency tour through the swing states of the Presidential election.  Her most political and topical work to date, Assassin toured the US, Canada and Australia and was filmed at the Warner Theatre in Washington D.C.

Cho has also completed her first narrative feature, Bam Bam and Celeste, which she has described as a fag and fag hag "Dumb and Dumber." Bam Bam and Celeste, directed by Lorene Machado and written by and starring Cho, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in late 2005 and has since played at the AFI Fest, Frameline, Fusion, and the London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival.

In addition to her busy touring schedule, Cho also maintains an award-winning blog, has taken up belly dancing, and in the spring of 2006 started hosting her own monthly burlesque, comedy and belly dance showcase called "The Sensuous Woman." Featuring an ever-changing lineup of comedians, belly dancers and burlesque superstars, "The Sensuous Woman" is currently playing monthly in Los Angeles, and will soon be seen in New York and San Francisco. Says Cho, "There's a lot of gender swapping and gender play. It's the gayest show you could have with women stripping in it."

Margaret was recently the recipient of the First Amendment Award from the ACLU of Southern California, and the Intrepid Award from the National Organization for Women (NOW). She has also been honored by GLAAD, American Women in Radio and Television, the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), and PFLAG for "making a significant difference in promoting equal rights for all, regardless of race, sexual orientation or gender identity."

Ian Harvie

“Ian Harvie is on a mission. Sure, the Transgender stand-up comic wants to make audiences laugh, but only if s/he can humanize Trans people at the same time. Harvie, who plays to mainstream comedy establishments around the country, including the Boston Comedy Connection, and the Funny Bone clubs, contends that s/he’s the only Trans comic on the circuit.”
– San Francisco Bay Times, July 2006

Ian grew up on Beaver Pond (for real) in rural mountain town, Bridgton, Maine until the age of twelve. Ian’s first comedy performance was in a family variety show on New Years Day 1975. “I was standing in front of a fitted sheet that was hanging on a clothesline in the spare bedroom of my Aunt and Uncle's house in Rochester, New Hampshire. It was a period in my life when I was obsessed with the Carol Burnett Show and her whole cast,” Ian recalls. Channeling the energies of Tim Conway and Rich Little, Ian executed an impression of Richard Little doing an impression of Richard Nixon – a complicated and technical feat. “As I recall, my impression killed. So what if the audience of all 7 or 8 people were family members.” s/he laughs. For years after that, Ian received regular requests for that impression and obliged every time. Still to this day, if a family member were to ask, Ian would do it in a heartbeat.

Today, Ian’s material draws from personal experiences and pokes fun at adolescence, family, sexuality, and substance abuse. Ian's sharp wit and hilarious punches give insight through a different set of lenses. Using expressive, quick misdirects, Ian's well-crafted humor has been seen in Outlaugh Festival 2006 (to air on MTV's Logo Network January 2007), was a finalist in the 2006 LA’s Gay Mafia Comedy Contest, The Improv in Hollywood and The World Famous Comedy Store on Sunset Strip.  Please visit Ian on the web at www.IanHarvie.com

Ann Hampton Callaway

ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY is one of the finest singer/songwriters of our time. The statuesque performer dazzles music lovers as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, and educator. Her talents have made her equally at home in jazz and pop as well as on stage, in the recording studio, on TV and in film. She is best known for starring in the hit Broadway musical "SWING!" and for writing and singing the theme to the internationally successful TV series, "THE NANNY".
Ann has become a favorite in the jazz and pops concert circuit, appearing as special guest artist with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall and Tanglewood. She has sung with over twenty five of the nation's top orchestras and big bands. She performed for President Clinton in Washington D.C. and was the invited guest performer for President Gorbachev's Youth Peace Summit in Moscow. Recently, she returned to Moscow for a sold-out engagement with Russian jazz star Igor Butman at Le Club. Ann has performed twice in Berlin's famed Philharmonic Hall by special invitation.
Ann recently signed with Telarc Records and is preparing to record her first CD for them due in May of 2006. Ann's last CD, SLOW, (Shanachie Entertainment), garnered high critical acclaim and is her most emotionally revealing and pop inspired album to date. She has also been a guest artist on over forty CDs.
Another milestone was composing "At the Same Time" for Barbra Streisand and having Ms. Streisand record the peace anthem ten years to the date after she wrote it. That recording, HIGHER GROUND, debuted nationally at #1, giving Ann her first of three platinum records. Ms. Streisand asked Ann to write lyrics to a Rolf Lovland melody, which she entitled "I've Dreamed of You". Ms. Streisand received the song three hours before she was getting married and sang the song to James Brolin at their wedding. She later recorded it for her CD, A LOVE LIKE OURS, released as a single and selected it for THE ESSENTIAL BARBRA STREISAND. She performed both of these songs on her live double CD, TIMELESS, for which Ann also wrote patter by Barbra's request. Ms. Streisand later chose Ann's song "A Christmas Lullaby" for her holiday CD, CHRISTMAS MEMORIES.  Visit her on the web at www.AnnHamptonCallaway.com

Judith Light

Judith Light has captivated audiences worldwide since her portrayal of Angela Bower on the ABC-TV hit comedy series "Who's the Boss?"

Recently, Judith returned to her performing roots in theater, opening in Washington, DC at The Shakespeare Theater portraying the title character in the Henrik Ibsen classic “Hedda Gabler”.  Last year she also took to the stage at the Union Square Theater, starring as the brilliant and uncompromising “Dr. Vivian Bearing” in the critically acclaimed and Pulitzer Prize winning Off-Broadway play WIT.

Judith has proven her versatility as a performer in the numerous films for television in which she has starred.  She has also recently taken on the challenge of co-producing as well as starring in several of her television projects. Her most recent film for television was “Carriers” for CBS-TV.

Judith starred in "The Ryan White Story" for ABC-TV with Lukas Haas and George C. Scott. In this landmark production which introduced many Americans to the horror of AIDS, Judith portrayed the mother of teenage AIDS victim Ryan White. Touched and inspired by this poignant story, Judith began working with several AIDS charities, and today is one of Hollywood's most active figures in this cause.

Judith spent the next five years with Milwaukee and Seattle repertory companies. In 1975, she moved to New York and made her Broadway debut in Ibsen's "A Doll's House," with Liv Ullman. This role was followed by a series of Broadway and off-Broadway productions that included roles in "A Streetcar Named Desire," "As You like It," and "Richard III."

In 1977, Judith was called to understudy on the daytime serial, "One Life to Live."  She then landed the role of Karen Wolek and played that part for five years.  While on "One Life to Live," Judith won two Emmys, two Soapy Awards and a Soap Opera Hall of Fame Award.  Indeed, one of her performances, "Karen Wolek on the Stand," was so powerful and is remembered so vividly, that to this day it is used as a model in acting classes throughout the nation.  Additionally, it was recently honored as being one of TV Guide's "100 Most Memorable Moments on Television.”

Today Judith keeps very busy balancing her acting and producing with her ongoing support in the fight against AIDS. She volunteers her time to organizations such as Project Angel Food, Heart Strings and The NAMES Project. Judith is the first heterosexual to sit on the board of directors of the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Services Center. The center recently named its library after her.

Robert Gant

Robert Gant’s love of acting and performing began at an early age. He started doing television commercials and joined the Screen Actors Guild at the age of ten in his home state of Florida. He went on to attend undergrad at the University of Pennsylvania and law school at Georgetown University. While studying, he never gave up on his true passions and took part in numerous theatrical productions. Interestingly, it was his career as an attorney that brought him to Los Angeles when he accepted a position with the world”s largest law firm. In a twist of fate, the firm”s Los Angeles office was closed soon after. Taking that as an omen, he made the decision to focus all of his time on the entertainment business.

Gant has had many notable guest spots on such TV hits as "Friends," "Veronica’s Closet," "Becker," "Melrose Place," "Ellen," "Providence," "Pepper Dennis," "The Closer," and "CSI." He also appeared in the independent films "Live," "The Contract," "Fits and Starts" and "Marie and Bruce."

Herb Hamsher

Herb Hamsher has had several careers over the years. After getting his Ph. D. in Clinical Psychology he became a professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Rochester. Three years later he moved to Temple University where he was an Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Services until 1980. At the time, professors were becoming unionized and the notion of potentially going on strike for a pay raise convinced him that it was time to leave the ivory tower.

During his tenure at the University Herb had an active private psychotherapy practice, conducted personal growth seminars, and consulted with business leaders and multinational corporations. It was also at this time that he worked with John Denver on his philanthropic activities, particularly assisting with John’s service on The President’s Commission on World Hunger as well as building The Windstar Foundation, his vehicle for impacting on national and world issues. It was through this relationship that Herb moved to Aspen, Colorado which still remains home-base, although his multitude of involvements keeps him away from there more than he is there.

For the last twenty years, Herb has also worked with the actress and AIDS/ Human Rights activist, Judith Light. With his partner, Jonathan, he has for a long time managed not only her career but also that of her husband, actor Robert Desiderio. The four of them have a production company, Tetrahedron Productions, which is the home of Herb’s current activities as a producer. His producing credits include CBS television movies, Too Close to Home; A Husband, A Wife, and A Lover; and Murder At My Door. He also created and was a producer on Judith Light’s short-lived CBS series, The Simple Life.

Since AIDS began to decimate the Gay community, Herb has committed more of himself and his passion to fighting the pandemic, to confronting the realities uncovered by our experience with the disease, and with working to add to the strength, unity, and spiritual base of the Gay and Lesbian community.

Michael Cashman

Michael was born in the East End of London in 1950. His birth was premature by three weeks, primarily due to his mother attempting to defend her husband in a street fight outside Stepney East station. His father was a dock worker and his mother a proud office cleaner so Michael's father registered his son at birth to become a dock worker when he left school. Fate decided otherwise.

After failing his eleven plus school exam Michael attended a catholic secondary modern school, Cardinal Griffin, and it was here that he was discovered in an end of term school show. Within weeks at the age of 12 he was performing in Lionel Barts musical OLIVER which was running in one of London's west end theatres. After some months he played Oliver and had the dubious distinction of performing for Richard Nixon, who later became President of the United States of America.

His education continued at his secondary modern school but by then career decisions had to be made and he was sent to a stage school in Surbiton, Surrey, which seemed a million miles away from his inner city home. At stage school Michael had his cockney accent 'knocked out' of him, and he learnt to sing and dance whilst acting in shows, films and television to pay for his school fees.

One of four sons he was the only one to become an actor and subsequently the only one to go into politics - a passion he has inherited from his father who was an active trade unionist.

Michael had a distinguished career as an actor and singer spanning thirty seven years. He also worked as a director at New Victoria Theatre, Newcastle under Lyme, and was made Associate Artist at Birmingham Rep. During his career he worked with luminaries like Lionel Bart, J. B Priestley, Sir Alan Ayckbourn (who directed two plays which were written by Michael), Sir Ian McKellen, Elizabeth Taylor, June Brown, Sir Elton John and David Hockney.

He has been an active campaigner across a wide range of issues and is rightly proud of his important role in introducing pension rights for members of the union EQUITY as well as being instrumental in the unions modernization programme when he was the Honorary Treasurer. During his time on BBC TV's East Enders he formed the Stonewall Group and was its founding chair. Michael lives with his partner, Paul, and they have been together for over 20 years.
